Period
104-96 BCE, reign of Antiochos VIII Grypos (121–96 BCE)
This ancient silver tetradrachm measures 3.1 cm (1 1/4 in.) in diameter and was minted in Syria. It dates to between 104 and 96 BCE, during the reign of Antiochos VIII Grypos, who ruled from 121 to 96 BCE (also noted as 125–96 BCE). The coin was manufactured by striking blank silver between two bronze dies individually carved by engravers.
The obverse features a profile portrait showing the diademed head of Antiochus VIII Grypos turned to the right, highlighting the prominent nose associated with his nickname "Grypos" ("hook nose"). The reverse depicts the god Zeus seated upon a throne, holding a sceptre and Nike, who carries a wreath, with a lightning bolt situated above the scene. Greek lettering and symbols frame the enthroned figure within the reverse field.

Historical context
Portraiture on coinage developed as a tool to identify rulers and communicate self-image, intentions, or accomplishments. Alexander the Great popularized such royal portraiture across the Near East by establishing mints using conquered treasures. Profile portraits were favored because they suited the shallow relief and restricted dimensions of struck coins.
