Period

ca. 132 to 135 CE

This wearable piece features an ancient leaded-bronze AE coin from the Holy Land, dating to the Bar Kokhba War (Second Jewish Revolt) between 132 and 135 CE. The coin is encased in a modern gold-plated pendant setting and is suspended from a 24-inch modern chain.

The pendant measures 1.3 inches by 0.9 inches (3.3 cm x 2.3 cm), with the total weight of the pendant and chain being 16.7 grams. The gold quality of the setting is stated as 58.6% to 59%, equivalent to 14K gold. The ancient coin itself displays a green patina and areas of white oxidation, with some visible rubbing and softening of the finer details. The obverse depicts a vine leaf on a tendril accompanied by a Paleo-Hebrew inscription interpreted as 'For the Freedom of Jerusalem.' The reverse features a palm tree with seven branches resembling a temple menorah, with an inscription reading 'Shim'on,' which refers to the given name of Bar Kokhba.
