Period

British Iron Age

This British Iron Age stater is an uninscribed gold coin attributed to the Corieltauvi tribe, specifically identified as the British I North East Coast Left type.

The obverse features a highly stylized, devolved head of Apollo oriented to the right, rendered through a complex arrangement of a wreath, cloak, and various crescents. The reverse depicts a disarticulated horse facing left, accompanied by the arms of a charioteer and several pellets above. Additional iconographic elements include a solar pellet below the horse, a distinct coffee bean motif behind, two pellets positioned before the horse, and a zigzag with pellet pattern set between two exergual lines at the base.

Struck on a slightly oval gold-alloy flan, the coin weighs 6.11 grams. Metallurgical analysis via XRF indicates a composition of approximately 48.16% gold, 40.19% silver, and 10.20% copper, with trace elements including iron and bismuth. This coinage reflects the economic pressures of the mid-Gallic War era, which necessitated a reduction in both weight and gold purity among British Celtic tribes.
