Record status
Individual type · partial
Period
1190h, frozen yr 19 (May 1777)
This silver rupee is a mule coinage produced by the East India Company at the Calcutta Mint, dating to May 1777. Following a decree by Governor-General Warren Hastings to close the Murshidabad mint, Calcutta continued to strike coins bearing the name of Murshidabad with a frozen regnal year of 19.
This specific specimen is categorized as a mule because it utilizes pre-existing obverse dies dated 1190h. The coin weighs 11.62 grams and features a die axis of 7h. The obverse displays the name and titles of the Mughal Emperor Shah 'Alam II, including the inscription 'defender of the religion of Muhammad, Shah 'Alam emperor, shadow of the divine favour, put his stamp on the seven climes,' accompanied by a crescent motif at the left.
The reverse bears the inscription 'struck at Murshidabad in the 19th year of his reign of tranquil prosperity.' The edge of the coin features shroff marks, indicating its historical circulation and testing for silver purity.
