1183h, yr 10 [May-August 1769]
This gold Mohur represents the third gold coinage of the East India Company for the Bengal Presidency, minted following the shortage of specie in Calcutta after the departure of Robert Clive.
Issued in the name of the Mughal emperor Shah 'Alam II, this specific specimen is dated 1183h (1769 AD) and corresponds to the 10th regnal year. The coin features elaborate Persian inscriptions on both faces, encased within distinct dotted borders. The obverse bears the legend "sikka zad bar haft kishwar saya fazl ilah hami din muhammad shah alam badshah," translating to "defender of the religion of Muhammad, Shah 'Alam emperor, shadow of the divine favour, put his stamp on the seven climes."
The reverse displays the mint name Murshidabad and the regnal year information, "zarb murshidabad sanah 10 julus maimanat manus," meaning "struck at Murshidabad in the 10th year of his reign of tranquil prosperity." Weighing 12.34 grams, this issue utilizes new dies prepared in Murshidabad and represents an early example of a coinage series that continued until 1788.
