Period

1180h, yr 8 [1766-7]

This gold Mohur was minted by the East India Company at the Calcutta Mint between 1766 and 1767. It represents the second gold coinage issued during the Bengal Presidency period, struck in the name of the Mughal emperor Shah 'Alam II.

The coin features a distinct 'C' differentiation mark to the right of the regnal year, which has been the subject of numismatic speculation regarding its origin. The obverse bears the Persian inscription, 'sikka zad bar haft kishwar saya fazl ilah hami din muhammad shah alam badshah', while the reverse displays the mint name and regnal information: 'zarb murshidabad sanah 8 julus maimanat manus'. The coin has a weight of 11.65g and a die axis of 6h.

This specific specimen is historically significant as a unique, documented piece, cited in several major numismatic references including works by Fred Pridmore and Paul Stevens. It was produced during an experimental period when the Company sought to standardize gold coinage across its mints in Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa, although the issue was eventually recalled.
