This gold Mohur is a specimen from the Madras Presidency of the East India Company, dating from the 1817-18 issue. The coin follows a Moghul-style design, featuring a frozen date of 1172h.
The obverse displays the inscription: "sikka mubarak badshah ghazi aziz-ul-din muhammad alamgir," which translates to "The auspicious coin of the victorious emperor chosen of the faith of Muhammad Alamgir." The reverse bears the inscription: "zarb arkat sanat 6 julus maimanat manus," meaning "Struck at Arkat in the 6th year of tranquil prosperity." Distinguished from earlier issues by the presence of a closed lotus flower, this coinage was authorized following a proclamation on 9 December 1817, which declared gold mohurs current from 7 January 1818.
These coins were eventually withdrawn and replaced with a new design incorporating the Company's arms in March 1819 to prevent imitation. The coin has a weight of 11.69 grams and exhibits original brilliance. It represents a significant transition in the Madras Presidency's currency system during the early 19th century.
