Period

c. 1619-25

This silver Crown coin from the reign of King James I (1603-1625) belongs to the third coinage series, specifically dated to approximately 1619-1625. The obverse depicts the King in armor, mounted on a horse moving to the right.

He is shown with a sword resting on his shoulder, and the horse features a crowned rose on its caparison. The design is set against a plain groundline and encircled by a beaded border with a Latin legend reading IACOBVS D: G: MAG: BRIT: FRAN: ET HI: REX. The reverse displays a quartered shield of arms, surrounded by a beaded border and the Latin inscription QVÆ DEVS CONIVNXIT NEMO SEPARET. The coin features a trefoil initial mark on both sides, which is characteristic of the 1624 issues.

With a weight of 29.49 grams, this specimen represents a final die pairing in the sequence of James I Crowns, notable for reading HI instead of the more common HIB abbreviation. It displays evidence of circulation, toning, a rim split, and a flan flaw in the field.
