Period

158-150 BC

This ancient Greek silver tetradrachm originates from Macedonia and is attributed to the Amphipolis mint, dating to the period between 158 and 150 BC. The coin is a significant specimen of the region's numismatic history.

The obverse features a Macedonian shield decorated with the diademed and draped bust of Artemis at its center. The reverse displays the inscription "MAKEΔONIΩN / ΠPΩTHΣ", which is arranged alongside a central club motif enclosed within an oak wreath, complemented by a thunderbolt symbol. The coin measures 31 mm in diameter and has a recorded weight of 16.29 grams. The craftsmanship reflects the artistry of the Macedonian region during the mid-2nd century BC, with distinct relief details visible on both faces of the silver piece.

It is documented in the Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum (SNG) collection under reference 1314. This tetradrachm is an important example of the currency circulating during the interactions between the Macedonian kingdom and the expanding Roman influence in the Mediterranean world.
