Historical context

Augustus, born Gaius Octavius, was the founder of the Roman Empire and ruled as its first emperor from 27 BC until AD 14. Following the civil conflicts that brought an end to the Roman Republic, Augustus established the principate, a system maintaining nominal deference to the Senate while retaining autocratic military power.

This silver denarius was struck under Augustus at the mint of Colonia Patricia. The denarius served as the standard Roman silver coin from its introduction during the Second Punic War until the third century AD. The obverse carries the laureate head of the emperor alongside the legend "CAESARI AVGVSTO", referring to the titles granted to him by the Senate. The reverse displays a domed tetrastyle temple housing a triumphal currus with an aquila and four miniature galloping horses, accompanied by the abbreviation "S P Q R".
