Historical context

Commodus was Roman emperor from 177 to 192, serving initially as co-emperor alongside his father Marcus Aurelius before ruling alone from 180. His sole reign, often regarded as ending the Pax Romana, was marked by internal intrigues, an increasingly dictatorial governance style, and a deific personality cult until his assassination in 192. This bronze coin was issued between AD 180 and 192 by the city authority of Aigeai, an ancient Mediterranean settlement formerly known as Aegeae.
