Historical context

Struck at the Rome mint, this gold coin represents the aureus, which served as the primary gold denomination of ancient Rome from the 1st century BC until the early 4th century AD and was standardised in the imperial period at twenty-five silver denarii. The coin honours the emperor's mother, Antonia Minor, bearing the obverse legend "ANTONIA AVGVSTA" alongside her bust crowned with corn-ears. The reverse depicts her as Constantia, holding a long torch and cornucopiae, accompanied by the inscription "CONSTANTIAE AVGVSTI".
