Historical context

Born at Lugdunum to Drusus the Elder and Antonia Minor, he became emperor following the assassination of Caligula, when he was the last surviving adult male of his family. During his reign, Claudius administered the empire's finances and oversaw extensive public works.

Struck at the Rome mint, this bronze dupondius features Antonia Minor on the obverse alongside the legend "ANTONIA AVGVSTA". The reverse depicts Claudius himself, veiled and togate, holding a simpulum, accompanied by the inscription "TI CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG P M TR P IMP S C". In the Roman monetary system, a dupondius was valued at two asses, half of a sestertius, or one-eighth of a denarius, roughly equivalent to the cost of a loaf of bread or a sextarius of wine.
