Historical context

This bronze sestertius was produced at the mint of Rome under the authority of Gaius, commonly known as Caligula, during the Roman Empire. The obverse features the laureate head of Caligula facing left, accompanied by the inscription C CAESAR AVG GERMANICVS PON M TR POT, designating his imperial and religious offices.

In Roman commerce, the sestertius functioned as a denomination valued at two and a half asses, representing one quarter of a denarius. The reverse design depicts Caligula's three sisters—Agrippina, Drusilla, and Julia—standing side by side to the front in the guise of Securitas, Concordia, and Fortuna respectively, accompanied by the legend AGRIPPINA DRVSILLA IVLIA S C.
