Historical context

In AD 54, Nero ascended to the imperial throne following the death of his adoptive father, the Emperor Claudius. His mother, Agrippina the Younger—great-granddaughter of Augustus and widow of Claudius—had successfully maneuvered Nero into the succession and guided his early reign alongside Seneca the Younger and Sextus Afranius Burrus. This silver denarius, struck at Rome during the year of his accession, reflects the initial dual prominence and authority of Nero and his mother before their relationship deteriorated into a lethal power struggle.
