Historical context

Procopius Anthemius reigned as Western Roman emperor from 467 until his death on 11 July 472. Appointed to the Western throne by the Eastern emperor Leo following a two-year interregnum, he confronted military threats from the Visigoths under Euric and the Vandals under Geiseric. Anthemius's independent rule brought him into direct conflict with the Gothic general Ricimer, culminating in open warfare and Anthemius's death.

This gold tremissis was produced at the Mediolanum mint during Anthemius's reign. The denomination was first introduced into Roman currency in the 380s by Emperor Theodosius I as a small pure gold coin valued at one third of a solidus, initially weighing eight siliquae. The obverse presents a bust of the emperor accompanied by the inscription D N ANTHEMIVS PERPETV AG, while the reverse depicts a cross enclosed within a wreath.
