Historical context

Arcadius was Roman emperor from 383 until his death in 408. The eldest son of Theodosius I, he ruled the eastern half of the Roman Empire from 395, following his father's death, while his brother Honorius ruled the western half. During his reign from Constantinople, Arcadius was viewed as a weak ruler who was dominated by powerful ministers and by his wife, Aelia Eudoxia.

This bronze AE3 denomination was produced under Arcadius at the Constantinople mint for Aelia Eudoxia. The obverse presents her bust accompanied by the legend "AEL EVDO-XIA AVG" and shows her crowned by the Hand of God. The reverse carries the legend "SALVS REI - PVBLICAE" and portrays a winged Victory seated on a cuirass, gesturing towards a shield inscribed with a christogram upon a low column.
