Historical context

Arcadius governed the eastern portion of the Roman Empire from 395 until his death in 408, following the partition of imperial rule upon the death of his father, Theodosius I. This bronze coinage was struck for his administration between 404 and 406 at the mint of Heraclea, also known as Perinthus, a flourishing city of ancient Thrace situated on the Propontis.
