Historical context

Arcadius was Roman emperor from 383 until his death in 408, ruling the eastern half of the Roman Empire from 395 following the death of his father, Theodosius I. In his time, Arcadius was viewed as a weak ruler who was dominated by powerful ministers and by his wife, Aelia Eudoxia. Coins in his name and those of his imperial household were produced at the eastern capital of Constantinople.

This gold tremissis features Eudoxia and bears the obverse legend "AEL EVDO-XIA AVG", accompanied on the reverse by a cross within a wreath. Introduced into Roman currency during the 380s by Theodosius I, the tremissis was a small pure gold denomination representing a third of a solidus. Struck at the Constantinople mint, such coins formed an established part of the Late Roman gold coinage system during Arcadius's reign.
