Heavy miliarensis in silver struck at Constantinople under Arcadius, AD 395–AD 403, catalogued as RIC X Arcadius 45. Obverse: Bust of Honorius, pearl-diademed, draped, cuirassed, right.

Reverse: Honorius, nimbate, standing front, head left, holding spear in right hand and resting left hand on shield. Obverse legend: D N HONORI-VS P F AVG. Reverse legend: GLORIA - ROMANORVM.

Historical context

Following the death of Emperor Theodosius I in 395, the Roman Empire was divided between his two sons: the elder, Arcadius, governed the eastern half from Constantinople until his death in 408, whilst his younger brother Honorius ruled the western half. This heavy miliarensis, struck under Arcadius between 395 and 403, portrays Honorius.
