Historical context

Arcadius was Roman emperor from 383 until his death on 1 May 408. The eldest son of Augustus Theodosius I and Aelia Flaccilla, he ruled the eastern half of the Roman Empire following the death of his father in 395, while his brother Honorius ruled the west. Arcadius was viewed during his era as a weak ruler who was dominated by ministers and his wife, Aelia Eudoxia.

This bronze AE3 denomination was produced under Arcadius at the mint of Constantinople. The obverse presents Arcadius accompanied by the legend "D N ARCADI-VS P F AVG". The reverse design depicts the emperor standing with a spear and shield while being crowned by Victory, who holds a palm, framed by the reverse legend "VIRTVS - EXERCITI".
