Historical context

Arcadius was Roman emperor from 383 until his death in 408. The eldest son of Theodosius I and Aelia Flaccilla, he ruled the eastern half of the Roman Empire from the death of his father in 395, while his brother Honorius governed the west. Arcadius was regarded in his era as a weak ruler dominated by his wife, Aelia Eudoxia, and a succession of powerful ministers.

This gold solidus was struck at the mint of Constantinople. The denomination was introduced in the early fourth century as a replacement for the aureus and served as a highly pure gold coin as well as a unit of weight equal to one seventy-second of a Roman pound. The coin bears the obverse legend "D N ARCADI-VS P F AVG" paired with a reverse depicting Constantinopolis and the legend "CONCORDI-A AVGG".
