Historical context

Arcadius ruled as Roman emperor from 383 until his death in 408, governing the eastern half of the empire after the death of his father, Theodosius I, in 395. His younger brother Honorius held the western half during the same period. This bronze AE3 coin was struck between AD 395 and AD 401 at the mint of Antioch in Syria, which had long served as the capital of Roman Syria and ranked among the empire's largest cities.
