Historical context

Classified as a siliqua, the coin represents a small, thin Roman silver denomination produced starting in the fourth century. The modern term siliqua has been applied since the nineteenth century to Roman silver coinage on the premise that such coins were valued at one twenty-fourth of a gold solidus, representing a siliqua of gold in value. The reverse of this issue depicts Roma seated on a cuirass with a spear and Victory on a globe, accompanied by the legend "VICTORI-A AAAVGGGG".
