Historical context

Honorius was Roman emperor from 393 to 423, having been born the younger son of Emperor Theodosius I and Aelia Flaccilla. Following the death of Theodosius in 395, Honorius ruled the Western Roman Empire under the regency of Stilicho, while his brother Arcadius governed the eastern half. His rule over the western empire was chaotic and precarious, and included the sack of Rome in 410.

Produced at the mint of Aquileia, this bronze AE3 piece was struck during the reign of Honorius within the Roman Empire. The obverse features the emperor's portrait accompanied by the inscription "D N HONORI-VS P F AVG", identifying the ruler. The reverse depicts a winged Victory walking to the left, holding a wreath and a palm branch, accompanied by the inscription "VICTOR-IA AVGG".
