Historical context

Leo I, also known as the Thracian or the Great, was Eastern Roman emperor from 457 to 474. Born in Dacia Aureliana near Thrace, his seventeen-year rule focused on ambitious political and military plans to aid the Western Roman Empire and recover lost territories. This bronze coin was struck for him at Cyzicus, an ancient city situated on the shoreward side of the Kapıdağ Peninsula in Mysia in Anatolia.
