Historical context

Marcian served as Eastern Roman emperor from 450 to 457. A former domesticus under the commanders Ardabur and Aspar, he was put forward for the imperial throne by Aspar following the death of Theodosius II. Marcian was elected and inaugurated on 25 August 450 after agreeing to marry Theodosius's sister, Pulcheria. His reign saw the cessation of subsidy payments to Attila and concluded with his death on 27 January 457.

This silver siliqua was produced at the Constantinople mint under Marcian's authority. The modern term siliqua denotes a thin Roman silver coin, conventionally applied to pieces produced from the fourth century onward and valued in numismatic study at one twenty-fourth of a gold solidus. The coin's obverse bears his portrait accompanied by the legend "D N MARCIA-NVS P F AVG", while the reverse encloses "SAL/REI/PYI" within a decorative wreath.
