Historical context

Priscus Attalus was a Roman senator and urban prefect of Rome who was twice proclaimed emperor in the West in opposition to Honorius, ruling in 409–410 and again in 414–415. Elevated with Visigothic support under Alaric I during his first usurpation, he issued coinage from the mint of Rome before being deposed when Alaric pursued negotiations with the imperial court at Ravenna.
