Historical context

Romulus Augustus, nicknamed Augustulus, was Western Roman emperor from 31 October 475 until 4 September 476. Placed on the throne as a minor by his father Orestes, the magister militum, Romulus acted as a figurehead during a ten-month reign. He was never recognised by the Eastern emperor Zeno, and his rule ended when the general Odoacer killed Orestes and deposed Romulus, marking the end of the Western Roman Empire.

This gold tremissis was struck under Romulus at Mediolanum. The obverse bears the emperor's portrait with the inscription "D N ROMVLVS AGVSTVS P F ꜸG", paired with a reverse depicting a cross within a wreath.
