Historical context
This gold tremissis was produced for the Roman Empire under the authority of Emperor Zeno at the mint of Constantinople.
The tremissis was a small pure gold denomination of Late Antiquity, originally introduced into Roman currency in the 380s by Emperor Theodosius I. Its name indicated its value as a third of a unit, functioning as one third of a solidus. Roman tremisses remained commonly minted across the eastern empire through the eighth century. This issue features an obverse inscription naming Zeno alongside an imperial title, "S N (rev.Z)ENO EƮ LI-EO NOV CAES", paired with a reverse depicting Victory and bearing the legend "VICTORIA AVGVSTORVM".
