Historical context

Vespasian was Roman emperor from 69 to 79 and the founder of the Flavian dynasty. After taking power following the civil conflict known as the Year of the Four Emperors, he established political stability across the empire. Vespasian was succeeded upon his death in 79 by his eldest son, Titus, marking the first time a Roman emperor was succeeded by his natural son.

This silver denarius was struck at the mint of Rome under the imperial authority of Vespasian. The denarius served as the standard Roman silver coin from around 211 BC until the reign of Gordian III. The obverse bears the portrait of Titus with the legend "T CAESAR IMP VESPASIANVS". The reverse depicts a captive kneeling with hands bound behind their back before a trophy composed of a helmet, cuirass, crossed spears, a round shield, and a parazonium, accompanied by the inscription "TR POT VIII COS VII".
