Historical context

Vespasian ruled as Roman emperor from 69 to 79, founding the Flavian dynasty after the civil conflict of the Year of the Four Emperors. Declared emperor by his legions in July 69 and recognised by the Senate in December 69, he brought political stability, reformed the imperial financial system, and undertook extensive building projects across Rome.

Struck at the Rome mint, this bronze sestertius carries the obverse legend "IMP CAES VESPASIAN AVG P M TR P P P COS III". The reverse bears the inscription "ROMA S C" alongside a representation of Roma, helmeted and in military dress, holding a vertical spear and Victory.
