Historical context

Hadrian ruled as Roman emperor from 117 to 138 and belonged to the Nerva–Antonine dynasty. Born in Italica in Hispania Baetica, he married Vibia Sabina, the grandniece of the emperor Trajan. Both Hadrian's marriage and his eventual succession to the imperial throne were probably promoted by Trajan's wife, Pompeia Plotina.

Struck at Rome under Hadrian's authority, this gold coin represents an aureus, the primary gold denomination of the Roman Empire, originally valued at 25 silver denarii. The coin features portraits of two prominent imperial women: the obverse depicts Matidia accompanied by the legend "MATIDIAE AVG", while the reverse portrays Plotina with the legend "PLOTINAE AVG".
