Historical context

Nerva served in the imperial entourage under Nero and attained consulships under Vespasian and Domitian before being declared emperor by the Roman Senate on 18 September 96, following Domitian's assassination. His brief reign lasted until his death on 27 January 98, during which time he pledged to restore liberties that had been restricted under the preceding autocratic regime.

Struck at the Rome mint, this bronze sestertius features an obverse portrait of the emperor accompanied by the inscription "IMP NERVA CAES AVG GERM P M TR P II". The reverse bears the legend "IMP II COS III P P S C" and depicts Libertas holding a pileus and sceptre, echoing the emperor's vow to restore civil liberties following the rule of Domitian.
