Historical context

Nerva became Roman emperor on 18 September AD 96, having been declared ruler by the Roman Senate after the assassination of Domitian. Aged almost sixty-six at his accession, he had previously held consulships under Vespasian and Domitian. His brief imperial rule lasted barely fifteen months, concluding with his death from natural causes on 27 January 98, after which he was succeeded by his adopted heir, Trajan.

This coin carries imperial titles on the obverse naming Nerva as pontifex maximus and holder of tribunician power, while the reverse records his third consulship alongside a depiction of the temple of Diana of Perge. The architectural design shows the two-columned temple on a podium of three steps, enclosing a seated cult statue of the goddess resting within a crescent on a base.
