Historical context

Marcus Cocceius Nerva served as Roman emperor from AD 96 to 98, assuming office at nearly sixty-six years of age following the assassination of Domitian. Declared emperor by the Roman Senate, he vowed during his brief rule to restore liberties curtailed under Domitian's autocratic administration. His fifteen-month reign concluded with his death on 27 January 98, after he had adopted Trajan as his successor.

Issued under Nerva's authority, this piece bears his third consulship in the obverse legend "IMP NERVA CAES AVG P M TR POT P P COS III". The reverse, inscribed with "COM ASI", depicts the temple of Roma and Augustus, bearing the frieze inscription "ROM ET AVG" and housing Nerva being crowned with a wreath by a female figure holding a cornucopiae.
