Historical context

Marcus Cocceius Nerva served in the imperial entourage under Nero and attained consulships under the Flavian emperors Vespasian and Domitian. Following Domitian's assassination on 18 September 96, Nerva was declared emperor by the Roman Senate. He ruled until his death on 27 January 98, vowing during his brief reign to restore liberties that had been curtailed under Domitian.

This bronze as was issued under the authority of Nerva from an uncertain mint. Rather than displaying his own portrait on the obverse, the piece features the bare head of the deified first emperor, Divus Augustus, accompanied by the inscription "DIVVS AVGVSTVS". The reverse depicts an upright winged thunderbolt with the legend "IMP NERVA CAES AVG REST S C", indicating a restoration issue authorised by Nerva alongside the approval of the Senate.
