Historical context

Nerva ruled the Roman Empire from AD 96 to 98, assuming power at nearly sixty-six years of age following the assassination of Domitian. Declared emperor by the Roman Senate on 18 September 96, he presided over a brief reign marked by financial difficulties and tensions with the military, before dying of natural causes on 27 January 98.

Struck at the mint of Rome, this silver denarius belonged to the principal silver denomination of the Roman monetary system, which had functioned as standard coinage since around 211 BC. The obverse presents the laureate portrait of the emperor alongside the inscription "IMP NERVA CAES AVG PM TR P COS II P P". The reverse depicts the personification Salus draped and seated upon a throne, grasping two ears of corn, accompanied by the legend "SALVS PVBLICA".
