Historical context
This silver denarius was struck at the mint of Rome. The denarius served as the standard Roman silver coin from its introduction around 211 BC until the reign of Gordian III. The coin bears Trajan's imperial titles, with the obverse legend reading "IMP TRAIANO AVG GER DAC P M TR P" and the reverse legend "COS V P P S P Q R OPTIMO PRINC", referencing the senatorial honour bestowed upon him. The reverse design depicts Roma, helmeted and dressed in military attire, seated and holding a Victory alongside a straight spear.
