Historical context
Struck at the Rome mint, this silver denarius formed part of the standard Roman silver coinage that had circulated since the Second Punic War. The coin's obverse legend, "IMP TRAIANO AVG GER DAC P M TR P", reflects Trajan's titles, while the reverse legend, "COS V P P S P Q R OPTIMO PRINC", incorporates the senatorial honour granted to him. The reverse design features the draped figure of Aequitas holding scales and a cornucopiae.
