Historical context

Trajan ruled the Roman Empire from 98 to 117 as the second of the Five Good Emperors of the Nerva–Antonine dynasty. A successful soldier-emperor, he expanded the empire to its maximum territorial extent through major military conquests, including the annexation of Dacia and Nabataea, and campaigns against the Parthian Empire. During his reign, the Roman Senate bestowed upon him the formal title of optimus princeps, meaning 'the best ruler'.

Struck at Rome, this silver denarius formed part of the standard silver coinage of the Roman Empire. The obverse legend reflects his titles, including 'DAC' following his campaigns in Dacia, alongside 'IMP TRAIANO AVG GER DAC P M TR P'. The reverse depicts Victory holding a wreath and a palm branch, accompanied by the inscription 'COS V P P S P Q R OPTIMO PRINC', referencing his fifth consulship and the title optimus princeps granted by the Senate and Roman people.
