Historical context

Trajan reigned as Roman emperor from 98 to 117 and was remembered as the second of the Five Good Emperors of the Nerva–Antonine dynasty. A soldier-emperor who presided over major military expansion, including the annexation of Dacia and campaigns against Germanic tribes, he was granted the title of optimus princeps ('the best ruler') by the Roman Senate.

Struck at Rome, this silver coin is a denarius, the standard Roman silver denomination introduced during the Second Punic War c. 211 BC. The obverse depicts Trajan and records his titles, including OPTIMO, GER, and DAC, while bearing the legend "IMP CAES NER TRAIANO OPTIMO AVG GER DAC". The reverse displays the legend "P M TR P COS VI P P S P Q R" alongside Mars, who advances holding a transverse spear and carrying a military trophy over his shoulder.
