Historical context

A successful soldier-emperor, he led significant military expansions that brought the empire to its maximum territorial extent, annexing Nabataea and Dacia and waging war against the Parthian Empire, which resulted in the incorporation of Armenia, Mesopotamia, and Assyria as Roman provinces.

This gold aureus was minted in Rome. The aureus served as the main gold denomination of ancient Rome from the 1st century BC until the early 4th century AD. The obverse presents Trajan with titles referencing his campaigns and honours, styled "IMP CAES NER TRAIAN OPTIM AVG GER DAC PARTHICO". The reverse bears the legend "REGNA ADSIGNATA" and depicts Trajan seated on a low platform with two attendants, facing three kings standing before him.
