Historical context

Struck at the Rome mint, this dupondius formed part of the Roman monetary system, valued at two asses or half a sestertius. At the height of the empire, a single dupondius bought roughly a loaf of bread or a sextarius of wine. Following reforms initiated under Nero, the denomination was regularly distinguished from the similarly sized as by presenting the emperor with a radiate crown. The reverse design depicts an arched, single-span bridge across a river with a moored boat, accompanied by the reverse legend "S P Q R OPTIMO PRINCIPI S C".
