Historical context

Trajan was Roman emperor from 98 to 117, succeeding Nerva as part of the Nerva–Antonine dynasty. A successful soldier-emperor, he led major military campaigns that expanded the Roman Empire to its greatest territorial extent, including a war against the Parthian Empire that led to the incorporation of Armenia, Mesopotamia, and Assyria as Roman provinces. The Roman Senate granted him the title of optimus princeps.

During the Roman Empire, the denomination was useful for commerce. The reverse design features Trajan seated in military dress on a platform alongside a prefect, presenting King Parthamaspates to a kneeling figure representing Parthia, accompanied by the inscription REX PARTHIS DATVS S C. The obverse displays the emperor’s laureate bust alongside his formal titles, including OPTIMO, DAC, and PARTHICO, reflecting his military honours and senatorially bestowed distinction.
