Historical context

Trajan reigned as Roman emperor from 98 to 117, belonging to the Nerva–Antonine dynasty. Remembered as a soldier-emperor and philanthropic ruler, he oversaw a major military expansion that brought the Roman Empire to its greatest territorial extent. Awarded the title optimus princeps by the Senate, he governed until his death in August 117.

Struck at Rome under Trajan's authority, this bronze sestertius commemorates Marciana. In the Roman monetary system, the sestertius served as a coin valued at one quarter of a denarius, or two and a half asses, which was useful for commerce. The obverse identifies her with the legend DIVA AVGVSTA MARCIANA, while the reverse depicts an eagle on a sceptre accompanied by the legend CONSECRATIO S C.
