Historical context

This bronze sestertius was issued under the authority of Trajan, who served as Roman emperor from 98 to 117. Trajan was the second of the Five Good Emperors of the Nerva–Antonine dynasty, having been adopted as heir by Nerva before ruling an empire that reached its maximum territorial extent. Coins of this type were produced at the mint of Rome during the imperial period.

The sestertius served as a large denomination in the Roman monetary system, originally valued at two and a half asses and representing one quarter of a denarius for use in commerce. Rather than depicting the emperor, this piece honours his imperial family, featuring Matidia with the obverse inscription "MATIDIA AVG DIVAE MARCIANAE F". The reverse design depicts Matidia placing her hands on the heads of Sabina and Matidia the younger, accompanied by the inscription "PIETAS AVGVST".
