Historical context
Trajan ruled the Roman Empire from 98 to 117 as the second emperor of the Nerva–Antonine dynasty. Born Marcus Ulpius Traianus, he had served as governor of Germania and Pannonia before being adopted as heir by the emperor Nerva following military campaigns against Germanic tribes. Trajan's reign witnessed extensive building projects and major military expansions across the empire.
Struck at the mint of Rome, this silver denarius formed part of the standard silver currency of the Roman Empire, a denomination introduced around 211 BC during the Second Punic War. The coin carries the obverse legend "IMP CAES NERVA TRAIAN AVG GERM" alongside the laureate head of the emperor, while the reverse legend "P M TR P COS II P P" accompanies a depiction of the veiled goddess Vesta holding a patera and torch.
