Historical context

Antoninus Pius governed the Roman Empire from AD 138 to 161, having been adopted as son and successor by Hadrian. He acquired the cognomen Pius following his accession to the imperial throne. His administration was noted for leaving a substantial surplus in the state treasury, promoting legal conformity, and overseeing a peaceful period across the empire without major revolts or foreign incursions.

Struck at Rome, this silver coin is a denarius, the standard Roman silver denomination introduced during the Second Punic War circa 211 BC. The obverse features the laureate portrait of the emperor alongside the legend ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P. The reverse depicts the draped figure of Aequitas holding scales and a vertical rod, paired with the legend COS IIII.
