Historical context

Commodus ruled the Roman Empire from 177 to 192, initially serving as co-emperor alongside his father Marcus Aurelius before ruling alone from 180. His sole reign, commonly regarded as marking the end of the Pax Romana, was characterised by internal intrigues and an increasingly dictatorial style of leadership, which culminated in his assassination in 192 and the end of the Nerva–Antonine dynasty.

Struck at the mint of Rome, this silver piece is a denarius, the standard Roman silver coin originally introduced during the Second Punic War. The coin carries the obverse legend "M COMMODVS ANTONINVS AVG" and depicts the draped figure of Liberalitas holding an abacus and cornucopiae on the reverse, accompanied by the inscription "LIB AVG TR P V IMP IIII COS II P P".
